There are many theories about crystal healing and why it works but
I believe that Magic Happens when the
subtle energy of the gemstone is aroused by creative focus
in the mind, heart & spirit of the
person wearing it.
Melody, author and teacher who has led crystal healing workshops
all over the world, has written extensively & eloquently about these gifts
of mother earth in her book
Love Is In The Earth A Kaleidoscope Of Crystals so some of these descriptions are hers. Thank you, Melody!
I've also learned much from Scott Cunningham's
Crystal, Gem & Metal Magic so I've also included some quotes from
this excellent book. You'll find more books on crystal healing at the
bottom of the page.
Moonstone is like a old friend - nurturing and comforting as she
gently nudges you towards growth.
Anyone who meditates or works in the creative or psychic arts
knows how difficult it can be to
"get into the intuitive zone" when nervous or upset.
Moonstone is a wonderful remedy for
"tempermental" types (like me!) as it encourages balance,
especially emotional balance. Adding the protective energies of
black onyx and/or black tourmaline can be helpful for
professional Tarot readers, healers or anyone opening up their
intuitive channels in public.
From Melody's book: The energy of Moonstone is balancing, introspective, reflective, and
lunar. This is a stone for
hoping, wishing and new beginnings.
It brings flashes of insight: understanding via intuition and
emotional "thoughts", rather than through intellectual reasoning.
Moonstone helps one to recognize and make
peace with the changing cycles of life and assists one in the total
fulfillment of ones destiny. Moonstone can be used to alleviate emotional
tension and to enhance the
positive attributes of creativity and self-expression. It stimulates
confidence and composure and allows one to understand
that there is no situation so difficult that it cannot be countered
It sustains and supports while promoting growth and supplementing
Once called the "traveler's stone", it is used for protection against
the perils of travel. Moonstone is also a talisman of good fortune.
It is said to keep closer that which is dear to one.
Moonstone can be used to promote ease in pregnancy and childbirth,
to enhance fertility,
to ameliorate PMS and change-of-life and to promote sleep.
It is also said to both arouse tenderness within the self, and to
bring happiness to the environment in which it resides.
From Scott Cunningham's book:Moonstones are worn
during divinatory acts and produce psychism in general. This stone
is also worn or used in rituals designed to renew or maintain a youthful
appearance and attitude, which can be even more convincing than outward
A gemstone that helps channel and clarify intuitive wisdom so
that it can be used for practical purposes here in the physical world.
Black onyx can help you to find and focus on your dharma, your "true path"
help you to safely, confidently & successfully walk that path.
Combining black onyx with moonstone can help to ground and protect you while
accessing the psychic centers... in deep meditation,
magical ritual and spellwork, or during divinitory readings.
From Melody's book:Onyx
is an excellent stone for intitiating the modes of
centering and alignment of the total person to the higher powers.
be used to banish grief, to enhance self control, to stimulate
the powers of wise decision making and to encourage happiness and good
fortune. It helps one to absorb, from the universe, those energies
which are needed.
It can be used to provide glimpses of that which lies "beyond" while
providing for activation of the memory with respect to ones roots and
It helps one to become the master of ones own future.

Onyx is a protective stone worn when facing adversaries in battles
or conflicts of all kinds. It can also be used as a defense against
negativity consciously directed against you.
Rose quartz, also called Roselle, is
is a pale pink gemstone
known for inspiring feelings of love, friendship & quiet self-confidence.
To strengthen a romantic relationship, combine
rose quartz with passion-enhancing, fidelity-inspiring garnets.
From Melody's book:
Rose quartz emits a calming energy which can work on all of the
chakras to gently remove negativity and to reinstate the loving, gentle
forces of self-love. It bringing calmness and clarity to the emotions
and restores the mind to harmony after chaotic or crisis situations. It
is an excellent energy for healing emotional wounds. It opens the heart
center, allowing for the dissolution of stress and tension.
The energy is soft and silky and rose quartz has been called "the stone
of gentle love" bringing peace to relationships.
It promotes receptivity to the beauty of art, music and the written word,
enlivening imagination and representing a young, warm love.
From Scott Cunningham's book: Rose quartz is used to
stimulate love and to open the heart chakra. This gemstone can also
promote peace, happiness and fidelity in established relationships.
Lucky for me, amethyst is associated with the astrological sign of Aquarius.
Since I was born in February, I've been the recipient of some
beautiful amethyst jewelry :-) Being a hyperanxious person by nature,
I love the energy of this stone:
it helps to heal fear, anger, anxiety, grief, confusion and resentment.
A stone of pure peace and serenity,
amethyst is the perfect gift for someone struggling with GAD, phobias,
panic attacks or addiction.
From Melody's book:
Amethyst is a stone of spirituality and contentment. It balances
the energies of the intellectual, emotional and physical bodies
and provides a clear connection between the earth plane and
the other worlds. Amethyst also bestows stability, strength,
invigoration, and peace; the peace being the perfect peace
which was present prior to birth. It is also a stone of meditation,
being excellent in conducting the energy of calm and peacefulness
to help one enter and maintain the state. It opens and activates
the crown chakra. Amethyst can be used to protect against psychic
attacks; the energy of the attack being transmitted to the universe after its
transformation into positive, loving energy.
It is "warm and cuddly" as well as regal and ruling. It brings one
the energies of serenity and composure while inciting fairness
in decisions and enhances the ability to manage responsibility.
It controls temperment by imparting a soothing, calming and tranquilizing
influence. It is also said to help business affairs to prosper.
It has, since historic times, been used to encourage and support
sobriety. It is an excellent stone for one who is attempting to
find freedom from addictive personalities (oneself, or another)
From Scott Cunningham's book:
Amethyst, a purple quartz, is a stone steeped in ancient magic.
A spiritual stone, with absolutely no negative side effects or
associations with violence, anger or passion, the amethyst
is the stone of peace. It calms fears, raises hopes, lifts the
spirits and promotes thoughts of the spiritual reality behind
our lives. Worn, it wards off guilt and self-deception, helps to
overcome additions such as alcholism, curbs overindulgence and
bestows good judgement. Amethyst calms emotional storms.
It also lends courage to its wearer and is a powerful amulet
for travelers. Because it is a spiritual stone, amethyst is often
worn during contemplation and is conducive to meditative practices.
The amethyst is also used to increase psychic awareness and to
sharpen the "sixth sense" Since it is the stone of wisdom, it allows
the information received through the psychic mind to be
appropriately utilized. This beautiful stone also sharpens the
conscious mind, quickens the wit and enhances mental powers.
A stone of pure, true emotional love, it is often exchanged between
lovers to strengthen their commitment.
Turquoise is an opaque gemstone with a beautiful greenish-blue color reminicent of a tropical ocean on a warm, sunny day. It relaxes the mind, eases mental tension and is
used for all-round protection and healing and to attract or intensify friendship, love, courage, success and good fortune.
From Melody's book Turquoise stimulates the throat, heart and naval chakras, bringing communication skills to emotional issues, to creativity, and to intuition, while
allowing for the application of love in all issues. It is excellent for spiritual attunement, for healing and cleansing of both the energy centers and the physical body, and for
providing protection. It can be used to protect against environmental pollutants as well. It can be used for attunement between those of the physical plane , as well as
between one and the spirit world. It is valuable to provide strength and protection during vision quests and astral travel. It acts to improve meditation and to further peace of
mind. Turquoise is a healer of the spirit, providing for soothing energy and bringing peace of mind. It has also been known to guide one through the unknown, protecting while
promoting ones independence in action. It also can increase one's psychic powers and is said to assist one in communication activities, both written and oral. It acts to
induce wisdom and understanding, and to enhance trust, kindness and the recognition of beauty. It is said to promote spontaneity in issues of romance and to stimulate the
initiation of romantic love.
From Scott Cunningham's book:
Turquoise is a protective stone, promotes courage and is a valuable amulet for travelers. It is also worn or used in money-attracting spells and given as a gift, bestows wealth
and happiness upon its receiver. The stone is also utilized in love magic; turquoise is worn, carried or given to a loved one. It is frequently used to promote marital harmony,
ensuring that the two persons involved blend with each other. Wear turquoise to attract new friends, to be joyous and even-tempered and to increase beauty. It is also a
healing stone. It strengthens the eyes, alleviates fevers and reduces headaches. It is considered a lucky stone and worn or carried to attract good fortune.
Garnet is a rich red stone that increases physical energy
& fires the passions. Its energy is similar to ruby, inspiring romantic
love, sensuality, sexuality, intimacy & self confidence. It's wonderful
for those prone to depression & would make a particularly
meaningful gift for someone you love.
From Melody's book:Garnet is a gemstone of health,
extracting negative energy from the chakras and transmuting
the energy to a beneficial state. It enhances one's internal fire and increases
personal magnetism. It has also been known as the stone of commitment - to
purpose, to others and to oneself. It is quite helpful in moods of
abandonment. The garnet balances and stimulates the development and movement
of the Kundalini and allows one to best flow with the energies available.
From Scott Cunningham's book: Garnet is worn or used in magic
to tap extra energy for ritual
purposes. Wear or carry one when physically exerting yourself. Because
it is a projective stone, the garnet is also worn for protection,
strengthening the aura to create a shield of highly charged positive
vibrations which repels negative energies upon contact. Garnets are
particularly prescribed as protection against thieves. In the past
garnets were exchanged between parting friends to symbolize their affection
and to magically ensure that they meet again.
I've always loved silver and nearly everything I design starts with
a sterling silver connector or charm. Silver is traditionally
associated with the Goddess and the Moon. Its energy is soothing & calming and
it increases mental clarity and psychic & divinatory abilities.
But the strongest & most valued feeling I get from handling and wearing silver is
an increased sense of emotional balance which is something
I personally can never have
too much of :-)
